Sri Ramakrishna as they saw Him
[Selections from the book by Swami Chetanananda with translation by]
Ramlal Chattopadhyay (1858-1933) was the son of Sri Ramakrishna’s eldest brother Rameswar. In his early twenties he came to Dakshineswar and became a priest of the Kali temple as well as a servant / caretaker of Sri Ramakrishna. He was known among the Master’s disciples and devotees as Ramlal Dada. Ramlal’s recollections were recorded by Kamal Krishna Mittra from his diary and the dates are given at the end of each entry.
SEE GOD WITH EYES OPEN
If anyone were to meditate or close their eyes while repeating their mantra. in the temple, zoiu the Master say, “What are you doing?” You are sitting here in front of the living Mother. Look at Her with satisfaction in your Heart.
Practice those spiritual disciplines elsewhere where you are not gaining this direct experience. “Suppose you went home to visit your mother. Would you sit in front of her with closed eyes and repeat her name.”
SINGING THE NAMES OF GOD
In the morning and evening Sri Ramakrishna danced and sang the names of God. “Jaya Govinda, Jaya Gopala.” (Victory to Govinda Victori to Gopala) “Keshava Madhava Dina Dayala.” (O Keshava, Madhava, the compassionate friend for the humble). “Hare Murare Govinda, Basu- Daivika Nandana Govinda.” (O Hari Murari, Govinda, O son of Vasudeva and Devaki) “Hare Narayana Govinda Hey.” (O Hari Narayana, Govinda) “Hare Krishna Basudeva” (O Hari, Krishna, son of Vasudeva ‘
THE PURPOSE AND METHOD OF JAPA
Sri Ramakrishna once explained the meaning of the name Rama: “Ra means the universe”, Ma means God, or the controller. He who is the controller of the universe is Rama. He also showed us how to repeat the mantram with the fingers: “While the mantram is being repeated, one should not touch the joints of the fingers, nor should the nail of the thumb touch the fingers. And further, if there is any space between them. the fingers arise, the outcome of japam will pass through it. “He also told us,” Relax after your duties are finished and smile after your enemy’s victory. “
THE POWER OF THE NAME
Sri Ramakrishna. Once said, “The human mind cannot comprehend the Divine Game (Llla) of God. With a single wish, He makes the impossible possible and the possible impossible.”
Regarding the power of the name, Sri Ramakrishna once said to Ishan Mukherjee: “Well, if there is a collision between two trains, some will die and some will survive. Those who started their journey with Mother Durga’s name on their lips. will survive, and those who did not practice it were killed. Regarding one’s karma, his foot is supposed to be crushed by a plowshare, but when he started his journey chanting Mata Durga’s name is only going to be a blade of kusha grass foot inside. This shows that he has escaped major injury by the power of the Mother’s Name. What do you think about it? “Ishan:” Yes, sir. It is possible. ”
Regarding fasting, the Master said: “After eating a little prasad (sacrificed food) of Divine Mother, if you eat regularly, you will not harm you. One enjoys the benefits of fasting — that is, purity in thinking — when one is fully observing or aware. But as fasting stomach problems, it is almost impossible to practice spiritual disciplines or to do any work. In the Kali-Yuga (the Iron Age we now live in), the Life span is short, and the human body weak and cannot survive long without nourishment. It is difficult to focus on God while you are fast. Therefore, eat something first, and then exercise your spiritual disciplines. ”
