Fact or Metaphor?

Something that often occupies my mind is this question: should certain religious texts be regarded as factual events or truths, or should they be regarded primarily metaphorically. As I have written before, I was raised Christian and I know many people who view the Bible as a true story, which they should take literally. I myself am increasingly convinced that it mainly has a metaphorical meaning. In this contribution I will try to describe an example of this.
Take this example. the Bible tells the story of “The Ark of the Covenant.” The picture that is evoked, especially by its detailed description, is that it is a gold chest personally made by Moses and that he spoke to a separate all-powerful being above the mercy seat. However, I consider this entirely symbolic. Moses did not build an actual gold chest known as “The Ark of the Covenant” in my opinion. This part of the Exodus story describes, in my view, a phenomenon that takes place mentally on everyone’s way to ‘his Promised Land’. In other words, it symbolizes everyone’s ascension process or everyone’s spiritual transformation. In that respect it is comparable to the image that Jesus was crucified on Calvary. Golgotha or ‘the place of the skull’, in that context, is the ‘place’ where the spiritual transformation takes place, in the head.
The true ‘Ark of the Covenant’, in my opinion, rests on someone’s shoulders. More specifically, the Ark represents the brain or, more accurately, one’s mental capacity. I will analyze the image of the Ark more closely for that purpose.
On the lid of the Ark are two cherubim facing each other, the wings of the cherubim spread out over the Ark in such a way as to cover and protect that which lies beneath. There is one on the left and one on the right. Now consider that your cerebrum consists of a left and right hemisphere. So, just as the cherubim covered something important in the ark, so the left and right brains cover the corpus callosum and some very important glands that together serve as a link between our physical and spiritual natures. One of those glands is the pineal gland (epiphysis), also known as the third eye. This is what Jesus was referring to when he said, “The light of the body is the eye. If your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be dark.” (Matthew 6:22).
Next, remember that “The Tablets of Stone” containing “The Ten Commandments” were placed in the Ark of the Covenant. In Jeremiah 31:33 it says: “This is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after that time. I will put my law in their minds and write in their hearts”. To be in the mind and heart. That it is not something that should be obeyed from an external law book or code. It is about something that happens ‘within’ you. Or this is the spiritual awakening. And then it is of It is important to realize that the one who is spiritually fully awakened no longer serves his ego. The law is therefore written to control the ego. The spiritually awakened man, on the other hand, who is not under the action of the ego, lives by grace. He is enlightened or has as it is called in the Bible the Christ consciousness. When one becomes enlightened, the Ten Commandments are realized and lived from within. This spiritual process is also called the awakening of the third eye (pineal gland). ‘ in ‘The Ark of the Covenant’ therefore for me symbolize what would really be experienced by a spiritually enlightened person.
Let me go back to the image of the Cherubim for a moment. God also placed Cherubim with a fiery sword at the entrance of “the Garden of Eden” to guard this entrance. Now for me ‘the Garden of Eden’ is not a physical place, but an ultimate state of mind: enlightenment. And to return to ‘the Garden of Eden’ we must ‘awaken’. The fiery sword in this respect symbolizes the Logos with which man is able to awaken the third eye.
My point in this contribution is that many writings are not meant to be taken literally. Literally believing a story does not change consciousness. It’s the hidden spiritual meanings in there that matter. So never stop researching and asking questions.
Feitelijke waarheid of metafoor?
“En daar zal ik u ontmoeten,
ik zal met u communiceren van boven de verzoendeksel,
tussen de twee cherubs die op de ark van de getuigenis zijn.”
(Exodus 25 : 22)
Iets wat mij vaak bezighoud is de vraag tot op elke hoogte bepaalde religieuze teksten moeten worden gezien als feitelijke gebeurtenissen of waarheden dan wel dat het toch vooral metaforisch moet worden beschouwd. Zoals ik wel eerder heb geschreven ben ik Christelijk opgevoed en ken ik veel mensen die de Bijbel beschouwen als een waar gebeurd verhaal, wat zij ook letterlijk moeten nemen. Zelf kom ik steeds meer tot de overtuiging dat het toch vooral een metaforische betekenis heeft. Ik zal in deze bijdrage eens een poging doen om daar een voorbeeld van te beschrijven.
In de Bijbel staat bijvoorbeeld het verhaal van de ‘De Ark des Verbonds’. Het beeld dat daarbij wordt opgeroepen, met name door de gedetailleerde beschrijving er van, is dat het een door Mozes persoonlijk gemaakte gouden kist is en dat hij sprak met een afzonderlijk almachtig wezen boven de genadetroon. Zelf beschouw ik dit echter geheel symbolisch. Mozes heeft naar mijn mening geen echte gouden kist gebouwd die bekend staat als ‘De Ark des Verbonds’. Dit deel van het Exodus-verhaal beschrijft in mijn opvatting een fenomeen dat mentaal plaats vind op ieders weg naar het ‘zijn Beloofde Land’. Anders gezegd, het staat symbool voor ieders ascentieproces of wel ieders spirituele transformatie. Het is in dat opzicht vergelijkbaar met het beeld dat Jezus werd gekruisigd op Golgotha. Golgotha of wel ‘de plaats van de schedel’, is in dat verband de ‘plaats’ waar de spirituele transformatie plaats vind, in het hoofd.
De ware ‘Ark van het Verbond’ rust naar mijn idee dan ook op iemands schouders. Meer specifiek vertegenwoordigt de Ark de hersenen of nog beter gezegd iemands mentale vermogen. Ik zal het beeld van de Ark daartoe nader ontleden.
Op de deksel van de Ark staan twee cherubijnen tegenover elkaar, waarbij de vleugels van de cherubijnen over de Ark zijn uitgespreid en wel zo om dat wat er onder ligt te bedekken en te beschermen. Er is er een aan de linkerkant en een aan de rechterkant. Bedenk nu dat je grote hersenen (cerebrum) uit een linker- en rechter hersenhelft bestaan. Dus, net zoals de cherubijnen iets belangrijks in de ark bedekten, zo bedekken de linker- en rechterhersenen de hersenbalk (corpus callosum) en enkele zeer belangrijke klieren die tezamen mede dienen als een schakel tussen onze fysieke en spirituele aard. Een van die klieren is de pijnappelklier (epifyse), ook wel het derde oog genoemd. Dit is waar Jezus naar verwees toen hij zei: “Het licht van het lichaam is het oog. Als je oog helder is, zal uw gehele lichaam vol licht zijn. Maar als je oog slecht is zal heel je lichaam duister zijn.” (Mattheus 6 : 22).
Bedenk vervolgens dat ‘De Stenen Tafels’ met ‘De Tien Geboden’ in de Ark des Verbonds werden geplaatst. In Jeremia 31 : 33 staat: “Dit is het verbond dat ik na die tijd met het huis van Israël zal sluiten. Ik zal mijn wet in hun gedachten leggen en in hun hart schrijven”. Daarmee wordt duidelijk dat de wet bedoeld is om permanent in de geest en het hart te zijn. Dat het niet iets is wat gehoorzaamd zou moeten worden vanuit een extern wetboek of code. Het gaat over iets dat ‘binnen’ jou gebeurd of wel: dit is het spiritueel ontwaken. En dan is het van belang te realiseren dat degene die spiritueel volkomen ontwaakt is, niet langer zijn ego dient. De wet is dan ook geschreven om het ego te bedwingen. De spiritueel ontwaakte mens daarentegen, die niet onder de werking van het ego staat, leeft uit genade: hij is verlicht of heeft zoals dit in de Bijbel wordt genoemd het Christusbewustzijn. Wanneer iemand verlicht raakt, worden de Tien Geboden van binnenuit gerealiseerd en geleefd. Dit spirituele proces wordt ook wel het ontwaken van het derde oog (pijnappelklier) genoemd. De ‘Stenen Tafels’ in ‘De Ark des Verbonds’ staan daarom voor mij symbool voor wat echt ervaren zou worden door een spiritueel verlicht mens.
Laten ik even teruggaan naar het beeld van de Cherubijnen. God plaatste ook Cherubijnen met een vurig zwaard bij de ingang van ‘de Hof van Eden’ om deze toegang te bewaken. Nu is voor mij ‘de Hof van Eden’ ook geen letterlijke plaats, maar een ultieme gemoedstoestand: verlichting. En om terug te keren naar ‘de Hof Eden’ moeten we ‘ontwaken’. Het vurige zwaard staat in dat opzicht symbool voor de logos waarmee de mens in staat is het derde oog te wekken.
Mijn punt in deze bijdrage is dat vele geschriften niet letterlijk bedoeld zijn. Het letterlijk geloven van een verhaal brengt geen bewustzijnsverandering. Het zijn de verborgen spirituele betekenissen daar in die er toe doen. Dus stop nooit met onderzoeken en vragen stellen.
