Swami Turiyananda says

We try so strenuously to make ourselves happy. But there is no success or happiness unless God wills it. Happiness and freedom can be realised in two ways: by identifying ourselves with God, or by living in eternal self-surrender to Him. Apart from Him there is no freedom of will or happiness.
