On the occasion of 72nd India’s Independence Day of India, let us recall an unsung hero, who was a revolutionary freedom fighter and contributed significantly to the Chittagong Armory Raid in April 1930.
Pritilata Waddedar was born in Chittagong, Bangladesh. She has completed her schooling and college in Bangladesh before moving to Calcutta for her higher education. She enrolled in the philosophy department at Bethune College under the University of Calcutta. There she was introduced to the revolutionary leader Surya Sen, commonly known as ‘Master da’. Soon she joined Master Da’s group and actively participated in freedom fighting activities. When she was just 20 years old, she joined the team for the mission of Chittagong Armory Raid. The team was led by Master Da Surya Sen. It was a group of 65 people among whom were Ganesh Ghosh, Lokenath Bal, Ambika Chakrabarty, Anand Prasad Gupta, Tripura Sen, Bidhubhusan Bhattacharya, Kalpana Dutta, Himangshu Sen, Binod Bihari Chowdhury, Subodh Roy, Monoranjan Bhattacharya. They raided the armoury of the British forces and destroyed the telegraph and telephone lines. It was one of the biggest movements that accelerated the independence movement against British Raj.
